Scottish geneology research is our specialty. In fact all of our geneology research has been based in Scotland. Luck of the draw perhaps as many family trees have many different influences from many different countries. If you can't research Scottish geneology yourself you want a local researcher to help you out. Although a lot of research can be done from a distance these days, even on the internet, there is always a lot of research that can only be done at the General Registers of Scotland in Edinburgh. We are very close by, based in Fife and we have experience researching family trees from all over Scotland from Islay to Dumfries to Dundee to Edinburgh and the Borders.
The official records began in 1855 in Scotland and they contain a great deal of information about our ancestors, much more than some other UK records. English registrations started earlier in 1837 but are less helpful. Old Parish records (OPRs) exist before 1855 in many parishes and the oldest date to around 1560 but are less complete and sometimes whole chunks of records have not been kept. These are the old church records and are excellent for protestant families. Catholic records are less complete. And yes if you research your family tree there are bound to be some skeletons and much inter-marriage of different faiths. It brings home to us what a quirk of fate is responsible for many of our family circumstance. If you are interested in finding out more, warts and all, get in touch with us at admin@geneology.org,uk.
About Geneology
Note: Geneology is called genealogy but we even spelt it incorrectly when we started out. As you research your family tree history you will find your ancestors called many different variations of spellings, particularly our highland ancestors, and we believe that many words in the English language will change in the future.
